Game 10 | Twins, 8 — Red Sox, 11 | July 5
Ballpark Summary
Approaching the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome,
we weren’t sure if we were about to watch a baseball game or be
whisked away by a UFO. It turned out to be the former, but Twins
“baseball” hardly seemed to qualify.
Before the game, we managed to snap a few pictures
with T.C. Bear, the hot-dog launching mascot. Our view of
the game was good. We were able to buy infield box seats at face
value outside the stadium, due to low ticket demand.
The Twins gave up 11 runs in a hurry and their
late inning comeback fell short, dropping our home team record to
just 2 games above .500.
Ballpark Perks
Wednesday nights at the Dome feature $1 hot dogs, so we had
our fair share. The climate in the Dome was a cool 72 degrees, a
pleasant change from the muggy Minnesota afternoon.
The dome was pretty cool to look at. The white cover is actually
some kind of clothlike material that balloons outward because of
the maintained pressure differential inside the dome.
Ballpark Downers
Generally speaking, the MLB Trip 2000 Team is anti- artificial turf,
so the Metrodome started at Strike One.
The sterile atmosphere of the Metrodome seemed to stifle fan involvement.
They ran TV ads on the Jumbotron in between innings, and I got the
feeling I was in my living room and not at a baseball game. Strike
Two.
Also, there couldn’t have been more than 9,000 people at the game,
and at least 6,000 of them were Red Sox fans. Even for a Wednesday,
the crowd was weak. Strike Three. ‘Dome, Turf, hit the showers!’
