Game 05 | Tigers, 3 — Royals, 1 | June 30
Ballpark Summary
Whoever said that baseball is no longer America’s pastime has
not seen a Royals game at Kauffman Stadium. The stadium isn’t as
shiny as Pacific Bell or Safeco, but the fans paid more attention
to the game and less attention to their cellular phones. Even though
the Royals lost, extending our losing streak to two games, all the
ingredients for a good time were present.
Ballpark Perks
Instead of looking at empty bleacher seats, the outfield is
a grassy knoll accompanied by an array of fountains and waterfalls.
The seating arrangement provided a good view of the field for all
the fans.
The scoreboard at Kauffman Stadium kept the fans informed
and was not cluttered with advertisement. It also provided instant
replays of every play. The mascott at Kauffman Stadium was great.
At one point in the game, he launched hot dogs at the crowd. After
the game was Friday Night Fireworks. Even though the Royals lost,
everyone stayed for the post game show.
Ballpark Downers
The first downer was that the Royals lost. Jermaine Dye grounded
into a double play with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. Besides
Dye, the Royals lineup featured, well, a whole bunch of other guys.
On a side note, Bill Kelly, who traveled to Kansas City from St.
Louis, became the first team member to post a losing home team record
(0-1). Over the outfield there is a view of the freeway that takes
away from the simplicity of Kauffman Stadium.
