Ballpark Summary
Say what you will about interleague play, but this cross-state rivalry
was a gem. The Reds hosted the Indians at Cinergy Field. Our first
pitching duel featured southpaw Chuck Finley and Denny Neagle. The
Reds won 2-1 in dramatic fashion. The final out of the ninth inning
was a dazzling close play at home plate on an Indians baserunner trying
to score from first on a double.
Ballpark Perks
Cinergy Field is clean and well-kept. The crowd on this night
was great, with a significant number of Indians fans to make it
exciting. Both sides were generally well-behaved, although we saw
our first fight in the main concourse level after the game.
Ballpark Downers
The thought process of entering Cinergy Field for the first
time went something like this:
- I’m outside.
- There’s artificial turf.
- There’s artificial turf?
This bizarre sight supposedly was cool in the 70s
but now is quite outdated. At one time, turf meant you built a team
with speed. But in this home run-happy era, why steal bases when
even your eighth slot SS hits 30 dingers? Overall, the ballpark
was nice, but out with the turf, Cincy.
